    Help Me Choose

Post by Hyde on Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:04 pm

Hello Everyone. Today I come to you not as the Admin, but as a fellow game maker with a question. One thing that I have particularly fond of doing over the years is working on two projects at one time. I know, you are asking yourself "Why the hell would he do that? Wouldn't that just take more time?". Well, yes, it does, but it also helps save time. Let me explain.

The human mind is sometimes delicate when it comes to dealing with repetitive actions over a large amount of time. If you do the same thing too much, you will become bored or that thing and possibly move on to something else, not wanting to finish the first thing. That happens alot with RPG Maker Projects. People get too into their project, get some done, and then get bored and move on to a new project... never looking back at the old one they worked so hard on. Although this doesn't always happen, it does happen quite alot. To combat this from happening to me, I implemented my own system where I work on two separate projects at one time. When I start to feel bored of working on one even the slightest, I switch over to the other one and pick up where I left off. This allows me to have a change in environment as well as make my mind work a bit harder (having to switch stories and ideas on the drop of a dime can be a challenge sometimes). This has been my system, this is how I do things.

Anyways, I have run into a problem with VX Ace... I have too many things I want to do. I set my priority to RockTopia (RockTopia Project Thread), but what I take on for my second project is beyond me at this point. This is where I would like your help. I am going to list some of my more well thought through plans and stories, and you guys can vote on what one you like the most. Alright, lets do this!

    Spoiler:

Set in New York during the events of the first movie, The Godfather Legacies throws you into the role as a soldier of the Corleone family as they head into an all-out war against the other families of New York. You will start the game by creating your own character ans setting your name. From there, you will have your first "family talk" with the Don himself, Vito Corleone, during his daughter's wedding. You are new to the family, but Don Corleone respects your ambitions as you remind him of a young version of himself. The Don gives you your first task to do for the family, and in turn and unwillingly, plunges you head first into a gang war like New York has never seen.

    Possible Features:
    Character Creation System
Extorting Businesses and Owning Rackets to bring in cash
Progression from a simple Soldier to eventually owning your own Family... And then running it
    Action Battle System
Era Specific Transportation (Wont be seeing no 2012 Toyota's here)
    Much Much More!

What Kind of Help Could I use?
Scripting: Slight Bit of Scripting could help
Resources: Would need quite a bit of custom resources
Eventing: Would need ALOT of custom events

    Temporary Logo

    Spoiler:

Dragon Warrior/Quest has been one of the longest running and most famous RPG franchises of all time. The name alone has spawned numerous games, but none of them were quite as unique as the Monsters series. The monster series allowed the player to tame and raise a team of monsters to take on legions of other monsters. On top of this system, the games biggest feature was it's in depth breeding system that allowed the player to create some of the strongest monsters known to mankind.

Note that this game would be a complete remake of the original with modern graphics, but would also feature alot of new content added in.

Cobi and Tara are both in a family of monster breeders who have come to the Kingdom of Greatlog to make a living. Shortly after they arrive, their mother tells them to pick up a Nut Pie from the Vault. As they are heading towards the Vault, they run into the Prince and his companion Warubou, making trouble for the townspeople. Unfortunately, after they get the pie, it is taken by the Prince and his cohort. Cobi and Tara follow them to a cave underneath the kingdom, where the two are arguing about who should get the goods. Cobi and Tara try to get the pie back but, in the process, knock a big plug out of a hole. The Prince leaves frantically and Warubo uses himself to plug up the hole. He tells Cobi and Tara that the plug allows the island of GreatLog to stay afloat and without it, it will sink. He tells them to get a monster master and ask for his or her assistance. But when they cannot find anyone, Warubou says that they will have to do it. A quest to save the kingdom has now begun.
    Wikipedia Quote

    Possible Features:
    In Depth Breeding System
    Monster Taming
A VERY Wide range of different worlds to visit
Some cool new things added on to the remake of the original to add Depth and draw old players back in.

What Kind of Help Could I use?
Scripting: Would need Heavy scripting help.
    Resources: Little resource help needed.
    Eventing: Little eventing help needed.

    Spoiler:

(Note: Age of the Sith is mostly canonical, but it sometimes strays outside canon.)
Growing up during the Mandalorian Wars, your character loved hearing the tales of his hero... a great Jedi named Revan. However, when he learned that his hero had fallen to the Dark Side and had become a dark lord of the Sith, your character fell into a deep depression and began to live their life as a thief.

Over the course of the next few decades, much had happened. Revan turned back to the Light Side and followed the path of the Jedi, eventually returning to defeat his former apprentice Malak. Shortly after, he left to the Outer Rim to fight the True Sith threat. During that time, former General of the Mandalorian Wars and friend to Revan, Meetra Surik, had overcome her status as an exile and regained her focus on the force. She used her new powers to stop a triumvirate of powerful Sith Lords who had been committing a genocide of the Jedi, one of which was a former Master to both herself and Revan. Shorty after destroying the Triumvirate, she left to the outer regions to join her friend in finding the True Sith.

Less than a year later, while continuing to search, Revan and Meetra both feel a concentration of the Dark Side growing within the Galaxy. They fear that something big may be soon to happen, so they put their search on hold to investigate the threat. Little did they know that this action would throw them into the greatest battle have ever had and put them face to face with the strongest Sith in the universe, the True Sith himself.

    Possible Features:
A Wide range of species and NPCs to both battle and converse with
    An Evolving Class system
    A player influenced ending
A story that fills the gap between KotoR II and The Old Republic
    Lightsabers (enough said)

What Kind of Help could I use?
Scripting: Could use some scripting help, but not a horrible amount.
Resources: Would need some slight help with spriting.
    Eventing: Wouldn't need much eventing.

In the section labeled "What Kind of Help could I use?", I am not saying that I must require other people to help me. I put that there just in case someone might be interested enough in a project that they might want to help out a bit.

Also, note that each of these would be fangames. I do understand that is sometimes looked down upon, but that is not why I asked for opinions. I would just like to know what everyone thought would be cool and see if anyone would like to work with me a bit.

Also, I personally am leaning toward Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. That is because it is a game that I grew up with and I would love to see be properly remade. But, it would require ALOT of scripting. Good thing is, I have almost all the graphics I would need for it.

Anyways, every have a great day and let me know what they think.

For me this is an easy choice, star wars the old republic, let me explain why...

The Star Wars galaxy for me has always been my most favorite of all of the different possible sci-fi galaxies *except for maybe Starcraft* I feel that this "world" has by far the most opportunity too make not only something interesting, but also something unique. Where as with the godfather game you have a much more defined time-frame and area with Star Wars you can expand almost infinitely on whatever you would like to see! Not only this but it also increases the chance of running not only into more notable characters but also a more open ended game, which is something many RPG's have a huge issue trying to do.

Also, i feel that you have a much better grasp on the Star wars game, not only from the way you phrased it in the text but also where and what you would like to see done with it!

Finally, I think you should do that game just due to the simple reason that Star Wars already has countless stories out there about it. Whether it be fan fiction or an actual book, you will have so much you could build off of or use within your game!

That is just my opinion though, I trust in your gamin abilities and think that you know what type of game you would be best suited towards making! :D

Wookiepedia my friend, wookiepedia. It is better than reading a damn book. I love that website because just reading about the different stories of star wars is crazy. It is like reading a history book or something. Only Problem I will run into with the Star Wars game though would be that everything would have to happen in less than four months (in-game time of course). This is because in the canon star wars universe, just over a year after KOTOR II, Revan falls in battle and is captured by the Emperor. Then, he was held captive for 300 years until he was set free in The Old Republic.

However, if I stretch canon just a little bit to give myself more time, I think I can really give the player something good to patch up questions about what happened when Meetra and Revan faced the Emperor together.
